Conference | February 15, 2018; 7:00 pm
Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, Portugal
In architecture, a conference is one of the primordial ways of sharing knowledge. Critical Distance allows precisely that space, establishing a close proximity and dialogue between public and speakers. The guests are acclaimed architecture thinkers, with a consistent and singular career, recognised by critics.
The practice of the Swedish duo Tham & Videgård, based in Stockholm since 1999, have long been distinguished by their stark minimalist aesthetics. Their design work ranges from the grand scale to the small scale, including public housing and urban renewal projects, educational buildings and museums, private houses and the design of interiors, products, furniture and lighting. These diverse designs are all driven by a coherent set of principles, however, and a distinctive historical self-awareness. For Tham & Videgård, buildings and objects are not merely an expression of contemporary tastes, but are a form of continued history projected forward in time: design in all forms is a message from the moment of making, sent on to a series of future moments of use and experience.
