Parking app “Parqly” is the winner of BIG Smart Cities 2016
Want to park your car but have no clue where to find an empty spot? Portuguese start-up Parqly, the winner of this year’s BIG Smart Cities contest, might just have the answer.
“Making cities more people friendly, one car at a time” is Parqly’s mission. This mobile app relays real-time information about parking lots that are near the driver’s destination or current location, as well the parking lot’s occupation and price. It also provides information on the closest public transportation, helping drivers to choose the least costly or the quickest option to arrive at their final destination.
Parqly was awarded a10,000-euro prize, a six-month incubation period at Vodafone Power Lab and a trip to Ericsson's headquarters in Stockholm.
Besides Parqly, three other projects received honorable mentions:
- Vodafone New Generation Networks – Take my Dronie brings together selfies and drones, allowing to take pictures and shoot videos up from the sky;
- Ericsson Internet of Things – Movtz, this technology transforms any regular power plug into a recharging point for electric vehicles;
- Public Votes – Ledviser is a wearable device for urban cyclists which indicates in advance their intention to turn left or right and the braking (stop light) as the cyclist brakes.
On its 4th edition BIG Smart Cities set a record of applications with over 230 participating teams, out of which 20 finalists were selected. For nine weeks the finalists received training, mentoring and support to transform their ideas into viable businesses.
BIG Smart Cities is an international competition, powered by Vodafone and Ericsson, aimed at technology based business ideas that can improve the life of those who live, work or visit a city.
