Lisbon Architecture Triennale: ‘A Terceira Água’ is the winner of Universities Award

‘A Terceira Água’ by Flora di Martino, Rita Martins and Saule Grybenaite, of the Faculty of Architecture, Porto University, was the winning proposal of Lisbon Triennale Universities Award.

In the scope of the 4th edition entitled ‘The Form of Form’, Lisbon Triennale launched a challenge to Portuguese architecture schools to reflect on Sines territory, a Portuguese costal city that hosts one of the most important ports in the country.

According to the judging panel, ‘A Terceira Água’ was the project that raised the most relevant questions and better represented the main tendencies of the strategies to respond to the territorial problematic of Sines: which meant the conjugation of an urban core, industry and port structure.

André Tavares, chief curator of the Lisbon Triennale’s 4th edition said: “The Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Universities Award provided the opportunity for hundreds of students of 14 Portuguese architecture schools to focus their perspective and knowledge on a specific place: Sines.”

“The projects display the quality and diversity of skills of the teaching of architecture in Portugal and the competition also gave rise to a fruitful debate, not only among schools and professionals, but also with the communities that inhabit the region”, he explained.

The competition resulted in 56 applications among which two were distinguished with honourable mentions: ‘De Encontro ao Mar’ by Carolina Dias and Cristina Silva of the Arts School, University of Évora, and ‘Atlas de Sines’ by Anna Villa, Beatriz Morgado, Constança Lino, João Costa, Luca Salermo, Marco Meggiato, Marina Vismara, Paulo César and Vera Cunha of Autónoma University of Lisbon.

The exhibition ‘Sines: Seaside Logistics’ opens on 8 October 2016, at the Triennale’s HQ, with 20 selected projects coming from this competition.

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale happens every three years in the city of Lisbon, Portugal, and is a forum for the debate, discussion and dissemination of architecture across geographic and disciplinary boundaries. The 4th edition, curated by André Tavares and Diogo Seixas Lopes under the title ‘The Form of Form’, will take place from 5 October to 11 December 2016.
