Durban Skytree gives an answer not only to urban renewal needs at Durban's scale but to a global need for sustainable, ecologic structures capable of providing dense, affordable residential buildings.
How to provide economic housing while increasing density; how to rejuvenate monofunctional city centers against real estate speculation; how to build affordably with sustainability; how to construct bigger with a smaller CO2 foorprint. This proposal gives an answer to these points.
Constructed with locally sourced wood from sustainable plantations it features a very light, strong and durable structure. Wood is also the only construction material that absorbs CO2 during its production. The wood trusses structural scheme is highly scalable and deployable on diferent locations and on builings of diverse sizes.
This building also features a "second skin" comprised of cork shingles providing a passive but efficient climate and ventilation control, decreasing the building's CO2 footprint.
