By 2020, 4 million tourists will be able to enjoy the view of the borders of the Vaud and Bernese Alps aboard the new trains renovated by the Pininfarina company for a Montreux Oberland Bernese (MOB) railway company.
The Goldenpass Express will go into service on 13 December 2020 and is a dream come true. It will link three of Switzerland's top tourist destinations: Montreux, Gstaad and Interlaken, adding to the appeal of these resorts. It is a project made possible due to a revolutionary gauge trick (width determined by the distance measured between the inner faces of the two-track or rail heads) that will make it possible to change within a few seconds of narrow gauge (1m from Montreux to Zweisimmen ) to the standard measurement (1.43m from Zweisimmen to Interlaken). This means that travelers will not have to change trains at Zweisimmen station. With Goldenpass Express, MOB expects to accommodate an additional 1.5 million passengers per year.
When redesigning the train, Pininfarina integrates some aspects that customers will enjoy it. Despite the change in mechanic position imposed by the new safety standards, Pininfarina's proposal allows to maintain a large window that allows visitors a high impact front view. The characteristics of future train windows can also prevent any reflection or reverberation in passenger photos.
For MOB in 1993, Pininfarina had already designed the Crystal Panoramic Express, one of the Swiss company's most successful trains and one of the most photographed by tourists. Pininfarina has extensive experience in the rail industry, having designed the interiors and exteriors of high-speed trains in Italy (the famous ETR 500) and Spain.
Over the years, Pininfarina has also designed carriages for the Swiss, Danish and Norwegian railways, the light rail system in service in Lille and the trams currently operating in several cities in Italy, Greece, Sweden and Turkey. For Eurostar, Pininfarina designed the exterior and interior decoration of the new high-end e320, which carries over 900 passengers at a speed of 320 km / h.
